Medical University in Plovdiv

The Medical University of Plovdiv, better known until recently with the name VMI – Plovdiv (meaning Supreme Medical Institute of Plovdiv) (in bulgarian: ВМИ-Висш Медицински Институт – Пловдив), was founded in 1945. It includes the departments of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, a department of Health Care, a Medical College (8 different specialties) and owned hospital facilities for up to 2,000 beds.

It has all the necessary departments to provide higher medical education according to modern standards. The university has English-speaking classes in Medicine and Dentistry and provides theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical education. It has also laboratories, clinics and other units with modern equipment – for diagnosis and treatment of diseases – while giving the opportunity of education, practice and research to students with medical, dental, and other specialties.

The Central University Library provides students with more than 170,000 volumes in medicine in many languages. For scientific issues, the University publishes its own magazine called “Folia Medica”, where views among scientists from many different countries are exchanged. Every year, a large number of Bulgarians and foreigners attend the departments (undergraduate and postgraduate) of the Medical University of Plovdiv. Green and picturesque, built on both banks of the river Evros (also known as Maritsa) and spread over seven hills, Plovdiv, with its 376,785 inhabitants is the second largest city after Sofia. The old city, spread out in one of the seven hills, is completely different from the suburbs, reminiscent of the past of the country, with large colorless blocks. The entire historic center is adorned with magnificent mansions, elaborately decorated with baroque details, and reminding a town in central Europe rather than the cityscape of Bulgaria. It is a city which offers everything, from restaurants, cafes, shops, museums, galleries and, especially, a city where every student can move absolutely safe.

The climate in Plovdiv resembles that of Northern Greece. Plovdiv has its own airport, but so far, there are no flights from Greece. From Athens to Plovdiv it is 861km away, while from Thessaloniki, just 362km.

Major attraction in town is the home of the doctor Sotiris Antoniades located at the crossroads of Saborna and Knyaz Tseretelev Str. It was built in 1872 by one of the first people with a diploma of Medicine in Plovdiv.

There was a pharmacy on the ground floor, which was accessible from the street. Today the former pharmacy of the 19th century has been restored and is a museum called “Old Hippocrates Pharmacy”.
