Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is a self-managed state university that was founded in 1959. It was named after the famous scientist, poet and archaeologist, Pavol Jozef Safarik. During the 17th and 18th century, it had substantially affected the progress of science and the scientific spirit of Europe.
The current structure of the University consists of four (4) faculties: Medical School, School of Science, Law School and the School of Public Administration.
Safarik University as an educational institution with authority and tradition offers training in three main cycles: bachelors, masters, and doctor’s (PhD). It has English speaking classes, while it cooperates with academic institutions and agencies around the world.

In 1993, the “velvet divorce” between Slovakia and the Czech Republic took place. Since then, Slovakia is an independent country leading its own way through history.
On May 1st, 2004, Slovakia joined European Union as official member and from January 1st, 2008, it joined the euro zone. Two of the largest universities in Europe have their headquarters in Slovakia, one in Bratislava and one in Kosice.
