ECTS credits and Why are they important for Studies in Europe
October 2. 2024 ECTS credits and Why are they important for Studies in Europe?
  • The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) was created so that ECTS credits could facilitate the recognition of studies and courses undertaken at different European universities and is now widely used in all countries participating in the European Higher Education Area. It is an important tool for flexibility, mobility and quality of education in Europe's universities.
  • How are credits calculated?
  • ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a system that assigns "credit points" to each course, based on the workload required by the student to successfully complete it. These credits are common to all European countries participating in the system, and each course, irrespective of the country or institution, corresponds to a certain number of ECTS credits. This facilitates the recognition of studies and qualifications between European countries.
  • In general:
  • 60 ECTS credits correspond to one academic year of full-time study.
  • 30 ECTS credits correspond to one semester.
  • The benefits of the ECTS system?
  • The ECTS system brings significant advantages for students and universities, facilitating mobility and academic recognition at international level. In particular:
  • Easier transfer of courses
  • International recognition of qualifications
  • Simplification of Erasmus+ procedures
  • Transparency and structure

  • ECTS for Schools of Health (Medicine and Dentistry)
  • For medical or dental studies, because they usually last 6 years, the credits that usually need to be accumulated are 360 ECTS credits in order to obtain a degree. They help to ensure a common academic basis in Europe, facilitating the recognition of qualifications. This is extremely useful for those who want to practise their profession or specialise in another European country.
