People who know Italian have the opportunity to gain a better position in the labor market, since knowledge of a foreign language and acquisition of the corresponding certificate(s) add an important qualification to their CV.

The Greek tourism sector and the industry of heavy machinery, boats, cars, computers, sanitary articles, electrical appliances and furniture, is trading with the neighboring country. Besides, the knowledge of a foreign language ​​adds points in the public sector.

 

Italian knowledge levels
According to the Common European Reference Framework for Languages the following levels are specified:

ITALIAN CERTIFICATES

There are several institutions that certify the knowledge of the Italian language through examinations and certificates, the most important ones are the following:

Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs of Greece (State Language Certificate – KPG)

The State Language Certificate (KPG) is an examination system aiming at the certification of “knowledge” of a foreign language at various levels, i.e. it examines the degree of competence developed by someone to understand and express him/herself both in writing and orally. Exams of the State Language Certificate are organized by the Administration of Foreign Languages Certification, of the Ministry of Education and take place twice a year, in May and November.

KPG is recognized as evidence of knowledge of a foreign language teaching by the Greek Universities, and is included in the qualifications specified by the Supreme Council of Staff Selection (ASEP) and all bilateral cultural agreements concluded by the Greek Ministry. At the moment, examinations are available for the following levels:

– A1 “Elementary knowledge”

– A2 “Basic knowledge”

– B1 “Moderate knowledge”

– B2 “Good knowledge”

– C1 “Very good knowledge”

 

University of Perugia (CELI certificates)

CELI are the most widespread and recognized Italian certificates issued by the University of Perugia. These are recognized both in Greece and abroad. The specific exams take place twice a year, in June and November.

The exams refer to the following levels:

CELI 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

 

Italian Institute of Thessaloniki (Diploma certificates)

Diploma di Lingua Italiana – level B2, and Diploma Superiore Di Lingua e Cultura Italiana – level C2 are issued by the Italian Institute of Thessaloniki. The exams take place once a year, at the end of May, and there is an additional examination period in November for candidates who have failed in one of the two sections, oral or writing. University of Siena (CILS certificates)

At the moment, the CILS certificate (Certificazione de Italiano come Lingua Straniera) comprises 4 levels. The specific exams are conducted by the University for Foreigners of Siena, which is member of ELC (European Language Council), and take place twice a year, in June and December. The corresponding certificates are recognized throughout the entire world.

 

Societa Dante Alighieri (PLIDA certificates)

PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) is a certificate comprising 4 levels. The specific exams are conducted by the Societa Dante Alighieri in cooperation with the University of Viterbo according to the Common European Framework for Language Learning and Teaching. They take place twice a year, in May and November. The corresponding certificates are recognized throughout the entire world.

All the certificates mentioned above are recognized by the Supreme Council of Staff Selection (ASEP) and the Greek State. Particularly, the CELI, CILS, and PLIDA certificates are recognized abroad.

 

KNOWLEDGE LEVELS OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE

CELI 1
Read More livello elementare. This certifies elementary knowledge of the Italian language.
CELI 2
Read More livello intermedio. This certifies intermediate knowledge of the Italian language. CELI 2 is a threshold-certificate. This certifies the ability of a person who learns Italian to sufficiently respond to the needs of a travel, to submit complaints, to face an unexpected situation in the transportation means, to make a friendly conversation and to support his/her personal opinion.
CELI 3
Read More livello medio. This certifies good knowledge of the Italian language. A student needs about 3 years in order to be able to apply for CELI 3. Adults with good knowledge of other languages and systematic studying may reduce the required time for the acquisition of the above certificate in 2 years.
CELI 4
Read More livello avanzado. This certifies very good knowledge of the Italian language.
CELI 5
Read More livello superiore. This certifies excellent knowledge of the Italian language, and ensures language proficiency.
EXAMS
Read More Exams for all levels take place twice a year, in November and June.
For the acquisition of a higher certificate, there is no need to obtain any of the previous ones.
In case a candidate fails in the oral or writing tests, he/she can repeat only the unit he/she failed within a year.
